We’ve compiled some of the questions most frequently asked of us. Hopefully, these will give you any additional information you need. Remember, you’re always welcome to Contact Us for a personal response.
What are the benefits of roll forming?
Roll forming can produce a high volume of parts that display greater uniformity and consistency from end to end, in almost unlimited lengths. The process reduces and even eliminates multiple stage operations such as notching, punching, welding and more. You can roll form a wide variety of metals, in addition to aluminum, while achieving close tolerances often not possible with other processes.
What should I know when designing a part for roll forming?
When possible, it’s advantageous to design with stronger, yet lighter metals that help to maintain your product’s structural integrity. Combining several simple components is also very helpful in creating a single complex shape because this often eliminates fasteners and minimizes labor time. And remember that long parts are ideal candidates for roll forming, allowing you to include different features such as holes, notches or other markings without interruption.
What is the range of thicknesses that your machines can handle?
Our versatile machines can deliver roll-formed product in thicknesses from .005” to .1046” (up to 12 gauge).
Do you have experience with roll forming exotic materials?
North Star has experience roll forming a wide range of materials, from ferrous metals such as steel, stainless and galvannealed, to non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass, copper and composites.
How tight can tolerances be held?
Tolerances vary as to the parts being roll formed, as well as to their applications. Please share information about your part and usage with us, and we will provide an honest answer about the tolerances we can meet.
Why should I consider roll forming my parts?
Roll forming is an excellent choice if you are looking for a process that allows easy customization, is economical and manufactured in a relatively short period of time. With roll forming, you can look forward to outstanding strength/weight ratio and compatibility with various complementing operations such as punching, piercing or bending. Because there is minimal waste with roll forming, it serves as an environmentally responsible manufacturing method.
Why is North Star a good choice for my roll-forming needs?
North Star offers years of roll-forming experience, operating from a 140,000-square foot manufacturing plant that is interconnected with numerous sister companies and locations. Featuring more than 40 different roll-forming lines, we handle all types of custom jobs in steel, copper, aluminum and stainless. Responsive turnaround, full tooling capabilities and a team that is dedicated to stringent quality control make us a company that you can choose with confidence.
Does North Star ship throughout the U.S.?
Yes, North Star can ship coast to coast in the United States, as well as to Canada, Mexico and other North American destinations.
How much lead time do you require to complete a roll-forming order?
The amount of time required, from order to delivery of your roll-formed parts, is dependent upon the volume of your product and the size and shape of your design. We always strive to expedite your order and we are happy to discuss with you any special timelines that you might have.
Your future can be as bright as you want it to be when working with the North Star Company, which values and promotes individual development and advancement. We recruit people who are dedicated to improving their lives through creative thinking and positive teamwork.
